1 Decision of Curris regarding grievance lodged against the University by Donald R. Walton. Aaron Wolff's findings revolved around the issue of whether UNI offered Donald Walton alternative employment, when terminated in 1984. He concluded "UNI has not carried its burden of proving that alternative employment was offered to Grievant.
2 Energy Conservation¿Everybody talks about it, but what¿s being done? Jere Wheatley says we could easily conserve 20 percent of the energy we now use, but it takes some planning. New energy effiecent appliances can help cut electrical needs.
3 Iowa High School students top nation in ACT scores. Reginald Green, who serves on the ACT Council says a number of other factors contribute to the state's ranking. The high score is evidence that investements in education are paying off.
4 Living in the country, working in the city-new trend in rural population. Iowa farm economy declined, thousands of Iowans left farms for employment in urban areas. Jerry Stockdale says the number of people leaving the farm has leveled off.
5 Native prairie grasses could save Iowa counties thousands of dollars. Returning roadsides to native prairie grasslands is expected to make weed control much less expensive. Daryl Smith says spraying Iowa's 800,000 acres of roadside areas costs the state millions of dollars each year.
6 Northern Iowa students, faculty, staff join together to observe National Alcohol awareness week, Oct. 16-22. Students, faculty, and staff will join together to observe National Alcohol Awareness Week by signing contracts to give up drinking for six days. Drake Martin says national , state and community leaders are invited to participate.
7 Three of the most dreaded words of all time...do your homework. Important part of the educational process, but researchers aren't sure it's necessary for all students. Things parents can do to help children, tutoring and making sure children have the proper study "environment."
8 University of Northern Iowa Faculty Marvin Pomerantz comments on Iowa's growth and survival, and the future of our young people, depends upon all of us working together toward the common goal of improving education in Iowa.
