2 Dramatic rise in Iowa suicide rates has counselors concerned. Last year 398 people in Iowa people committed suicide, it the highest it has been since the '30s. Norm Story says poor self esteem, drugs and alcohol problems and economic factors are major cause of suicides.
3 First came hackers...now it's viruses...why it does not compute. Computer viruses are sweeping the country, deleting files of information and causing panic and dispare among computer users. Walter Beck says there are ways to provide immunity against computer bugs.
4 Iowa Communication Association honors retired Northen Iowa prof, Alumna during state meeting. Kenneth Butzier was presented the 1988 Iowa Communications Association Citation Award. Liane Nichols, received the University's ICA Distingushed Alumni Award for 1988. Both award were presented last month at the Association's annual meeting.

Donna Maier says other dicoverers may have found America shortly before Columbus did. Although Columbus recorded the actual discovery.
6 Soviet shake-up eventually could strengthen U.S./Soviet relations. Tim O'Conner says the changes are a sign that Mikhail Gorbachev is pushing for faster political and ecomonic reforms. Soviet citizens are very politcal, and want leaders who can solve ecomonic shortages.
7 The cold winds of winter send shivers through your house. Jere Wheatley says now is the time to to weatherstrip and caulk homes. Up to fourty percent of money spent on heating costs seeps through the "cracks." Wheatly says winterizing homes can add up to substantial savings.
8 University of Northern Iowa hosts Spirit Camp for Kids Oct. 22 UNI hosts a cheerleading camp for students in grades K-9. Morning activities will be aerobics, cheers and sideline chants and introduction of the UNI mascots. In the afternoon gymnatics and spirit dance, followed by a cheerleading competion.
