1 'Focus on Y.O.U.' theme for University of Northern Iowa's 26th annual workshop for educational office personnel March 22. About 350 educational office personnel from throughout the state are expected to attend the workshop, which will focus on the many aspects of team interaction.
2 Addictive personalities-- why do people become addicted? Jenney Bass says many times one addiction leads to another, and says there are some traits in people who become addicted to chemical substances. Counseling and support are usually needed before a person can break a chain of addiction.
3 CPR training-- four critical minutes to save someone's life. Jill Fjelstul, it's important for everyone to know basic lifesaving skills since heart attacks, strokes, or even accidents can happen anywhere.
4 Riverboat gambling-- funding state programs via "sin taxes." Iowa legislature is debating whether or not riverboat gambling will be allowed on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Ken McCormick says there are other ways to raise additional revenue for the state.
5 Solving crimes in the lab by breaking the DNA code. Robert Seager says all it takes is a sample of blood or a root of hair to match up a suspect with collected evidence. Recent discoveries in DNA research have lead to the identification and possible cure for a number of hereditary diseases.
6 Sun worshipers beware-- tanning can be hazardous to your health. Joan Thompson says many claim indoor tanning is safe, ultraviolet light in any form is highly damaging.
