1 Awareness of the challenges faced by disabled persons is goal of Northern Iowa's handicapped awareness weeek' activites, April 5, 10-11. Activites will include a movie, a disability simulation and a wheelchair basketball game. The purpose is to help nondisabled person appreciate the barrirers and dilemmas of being handicapped in an inaccessible society.
2 Dangers in the home -- often overlooked, and potentially deadly. Ivan Eland say clearing up the "accident areas" of the home, like toys on the stairs, outlets with too many extension cords and old paint in the basement, could prevent 90 percent of all home accidents from happening.
3 Interrelationship of writing to all academic disciplines, variety of other topics to be featured in Northern Iowa's annual 'Student as Critic.' The Conference focuses on critical writing and thinking. Best selling novelist Kurt Vonnegut will be the topic of several programs. List of conference sessions and who presenting.
4 Live from the classroom -- It's interactive TV. Robert Harman says the multi-million dollar network will allow schools to share instructors, bring college classes to rural areas, and will be used by businesses as well to train workers.
5 Rural education -- it all started with one-room schools. William Dreier says rural education has changed dramatically over the past fifty years. Educators still have special problems and concerns when it comes to educating rural students.
6 The tick season has arrived -- beware of lyme disease. Nixon Wilson, says 30 Iowans came down with the disease. Lyme disease is hard to diagnose because it imitates many other diseases. People who are outside need to dress appropriately and use insect repellent.
7 The weekly allowance -- a good idea? If so how much? Barbara Pershing says managing a child's allowance can be done in a way that's both positive and almost painless to a parent's pocketbook.
