1 America's last frontier now threatened -- Alaska. Recent oil spill in Valdez has many environmentalists asking questions about the threat that oil and mineral exploration have on the state. Jim Walters adds developers are "eyeing" remote undeveloped areas for oil, gas, coal, and gold reserves.
2 Athletic nutrition -- eating for peak performance. Forrest Dolgener says there's an increasing belief among athletes the good nutrition can boost performance levels. There are specific guidelines for vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements for people who participate in sports.
3 International relations' topic for seventh annual spring public relations institute at University of Northern Iowa. The keynote address, "Using Communication to Develop World Opportunities," presented by John Steuber. "International Relations: How Iowa Organizations Bring the World Home," discussed by a panel representing corporate, agency and non-profit organizations.
4 Lindquists honored for school donation. The Lindquist family donated the 109 year old one-room school to Northern Iowa in 1987. The school was located south of Laurens in Pocahontas County.
5 Northern Iowa to host lecture by Russian literature and language specialist in the advantages of studying for a semester in the Soviet Union, April 13 With the new open door policy established by the Soviet Union, U.S. students will not only be presented with many new educational opportunities, but they will also see new career possibilities, provided they have a good understanding of the Soviet Union.
6 One-room school dedication. Several hundred visitors went through the Marshall Center School during ceremonies of the former Pocahontas County one room school. The 109 year old building was brought to Cedar Falls in 1987 as a symbol of Iowa's rural educational heritage.
7 Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme -- herb gardening trend grows. Leila George is presenting a seminar on growing herbs. She says herb aren't difficult to grow and can be used to fortify, spice up, and help people break bad habits like adding salt to food.
8 Public debate Wednesday (April 12) at University of Northern Iowa to deal with prison/jail overcrowding. The debate will feature Dave Bushek and Dan Janssen against Nathan Coco and Charles Smith.
9 The junior high years -- educational changes, pressures, problems. Experts says middle school years are the best chance to reach kids and set them on a successful path to adulthood. Judy Beckman says educators are focusing on the middle school years, and are finding ways to make them more positive.
10 Twenty-five years in Iowa -- a celebration of keeping the peace. Model United Nations which is an organization that pairs high school students with a country in order for students to get a better understanding of the world, and how the official U.N. works. Annual convention will be held on April 13 to 16 at UNI.
11 Two well known Midwestern printmakers to lecture Wednesday (April 12) on their works; present workshops this week at the University of Northern Iowa. Warrington Colescott is an emeritus professor of art at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He developed and directed a notable program in etching/intaglio printmaking. Frances Myers now heads the etching area at UW - Madison.
12 UNI golf course open; fees and hours announced. Open to the public from 7:30 am to sundown, weather permitting, seven days a week.
13 University of Northern Iowa's international student association to sponsor intercultural day. The festivities, which include basic language lessons, games, dancing, international foods, costume shows and slide shows, are designed to give people a better understanding of other cultures around the world.
