3 Build an insect habitat in your own backyard -- butterfly gardening. Leila George is presenting a seminar on butterfly gardening and says the biggest mistake people make when trying to attract these insects is to use household insecticides and remove their habitat in the fall.
4 Fire on the prairie -- necessary and beneficial. Daryl Smith says fire on the prairie gets rid of many non-native plants and provides essential nutrients that help prairies grow faster. Fire keeps trees and other woody plants out of prairie areas.
5 International friendship gathering at University of Northern Iowa Sunday (April 23) to celebrate 'Peace and Unity in a World of Diversity.' International students representing 46 countries, will come together to celebrate the first annual world-get-together. Main goal of the reception, "is to begin to build bridges across languages, cultures and ideologies¿"
6 Reading to children helps establish lifelong reading skills. Jeannie Steele, says there are things parents can do to make their children better readers. Parents can use newspapers and magazines to create "reading games" that will help develop essential reading skills.
7 The world oil supply -- fragile, and costing us more. Jere Wheatly, says many people blamed the Exxon disaster for the price hike at the pumps, it really had nothing to do with the spill ... he says oil has been underpriced, and was expected to go up.
8 University of Northern Iowa to host presentation on 'The United States, Europe and German reunification,' Friday (April 21.) Hanswolf Haunhorst, the editor of Focus Magazine for the NATO Forces in Germany, will be the guest lecturer. Haunhorst has been a newspaper and radio correspondent in numerous cities across Europe. He has also worked for several U.S. government agencies.
