1 A cool environment for a hot Iowa summer, check out a cave. Ron Wilson says caves attract people because they are like exploring other worlds. He recommends that people interested in exploring caves on their own, join a speleological club, since caves can be dangerous places with underground rivers.
2 Children's literature course to be offered at Storm Lake by University of Northern Iowa continuing education. Course focuses on literature across the curriculum, and will survey recently-published children's books. Current issues and trends in children's literature will be discussed.
3 Church organists can improve skills through University of Northern Iowa program. The "Church Organists Training Program" is designed to teach church organists basic organ technique, how to lead congregational singing and accompany choir anthems and soloists, and play simple organ literature of high quality appropriate for the church.
4 Computers for college -- necessity or luxury? Steve Moon says students who want their own computer should check out campus facilities, if their college or university has adequate facilities, they may not need to purchase one.
5 Educational threat-- shortage of faculty at colleges and universities. Marlene Strathe, says Iowa has done a good job in offering competitive salaries to instructors, many prospective faculty members are interested in quality of life, and the research aspects of campus employment.
6 Finding ways to recycle trash, new markets are needed. John Konefes says studies show that up to 30 percent of what's dumped in landfills can be recycled. Cities will be forced to find ways to deal with trash, composting materials is one potential development that could benefit both cities and farmers.
7 Fling those discs! Disc golf championships held at Northern Iowa. Northern Iowa is host to the World Professional Disc Golf Championships this week, and UNI math professor, Tom Hausmann, will be one of the 288 players competing for over $30,000 in prize money.
8 Linguistics course to be offered at Des Moines Area Community College by University of Northern Iowa faculty. Particpants will examine the major phonological, syntactic and semantic aspects of a variety of human languages.
9 Three education workshops to be offered at Marshalltown community college by University of Northern Iowa. Classes offered will be "Educational Research," "Workshop: Teaching Thinking Skills," and "Child, Family, School, and Community Relationships."
10 University of Northern Iowa students to "get on board" with world's largest checkers game as semester begins (Aug. 28.) Students will try to make their way into the Guinness Book of World Records by forming the world's largest human checkers game. It's a part of "Welcome '89." Schedule of events given.
