1 From crab shell sutures to cleaning up oil spills: students at Univeristy of Northern Iowa celebrate national chemistry week (Oct. 29- Nov. 3.) Hypo-allergenic, alkaline-resitsant sutures made from the chitin in crab shells are just one example of front line reseach in chemistry which could improve many lives. Students and faculty of the chemistry department will cite many other examples.
2 Many older Iowans from symptoms of depression, according to study by University of Northern Iowa professor of psychology. Research completed recently by Julia Wallace, shows that Iowans over the age of 65 report increasingly higher levels of insomnia, loneliness, and feelings of being left out, than younger people.
3 Marshall center school to hold re-enactment during homecoming. The school will stage a re-enactment from the early 1900s. Doug Piehl says "Everyone will be in period dress and will act out the school day. We encourage everyone to walk through on his or her way from the parade to the game.
4 University of Northern Iowa debaters place third of 41 teams at Kansas tourney. The team made up of Dan Janssen and Jon Morphew defeated Augustana College and Baylor University to advance to the semifinal round. They were defeated by the University of Southern California in the semifinals, finishing in third place behind Augustana.
5 University of Northern Iowa speech team fares well in recent competition. Speech team carried off second place honors out of 16 schools competing in a recent individual events tournament at Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota.
