1 AIDS educations-- what do parents say when children raise questions? Dody Olson, says many parents have a tough time explaining this disease to their children, but says there are a few books designed specifically to help both parents and children.
2 Making the most of parent-teacher conferences--expert advice. Ann Vernon, says all parents should attend a conference and build a working relationship with teachers. Conference have a positive effect on children's education, and help parents understand where the students' strengths and weaknesses lie.
3 Northern Iowa French professor honored. Michael Oates recently was the recipient of a prestigious national teaching award, and another award presented by Iowa Foreign Language Association.
4 Retirement is no day at the beach without careful planning, says University of Northern Iowa professor. Bob Claus says retirement can be a welcome time for people to relax, or go back to school, or even re-enter the job market. But for others retirement can trigger feelings of displacement and severe emotional stress.
5 The raking season is upon us -- is there a better way to get rid of leaves? Director of the Iowa Waste Reduction Center says composting is a better way to dispose of leaves and yard waste. Up to 20 percent of what ends up in the landfill is grass clippings and bags of leaves.
6 UNI prof. didn't brush teeth for three days all in the name of science! Ira Simet is conducting research on polysaccharides. These substances are found in plaque build up on teeth, and leads to tooth decay. The end result of his research may be a drug that can be added to mouthwash or toothpaste.
7 University of Northern Iowa French professor receives national and state awards. Michael Oates received the 1989 Nelson Brooks Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Culture. He has also been named 1989-90 Foreign Language Educator of the Year by the Iowa Foreign Language Association.
8 You wouldn't believe what researchers have locked up in the herbarium. The Herbarium at Northern Iowa contains over 40,000 individual plant species, and has been noted as one of the best collections in the state. Scott Zager, is conducting research on marsh sedges.
