2 Four new members named to University of Northern Iowa foundation board of directors. The four new trustees are James M. "Mike" Earley, H. Lynn Horak, J. Michael McBride and Gayle Johns Rose. The UNI Foundation board of directors is made up of 19 business and community leaders from throughout the United States.
3 Harmful effects of excess noise could harm wildlife as well as people, says University of Northern Iowa audiology professor. Joseph Smaldino notes that hearing loss resulting from excess noise can put humans and animals alike at a severe disadvantage in communicating with other members of their species, or hearing sounds. In the wild such damage could prove fatal.
4 Preventing tooth decay is aim of research into sugars underway at University of Northern Iowa. Ira Simet began last spring to research the biochemical process which can lead to tooth decay. Plaque is a sugary mess in your mouth and bateria grow on plaque that can result in tooth decay.
5 Two Northern Iowa graduate students awarded Stanley Butler Reeves scholarships. Jann Knight and Parma Verly will receive a $500 scholarship for the academic year. Each is a master's candidate in reading education. Stanley Butler Reeves Reading Scholarships are awarded annually to two graduate students based on achievement and need.
6 UNI senior wins discman (TM) at IBM PS-2 fair. Ray Guzzi, a senior majoring in food nutrition and business. IBM sponsored a personal computer fair at UNI at which participants could register for the prize.
