1 "Marketing your foreign language skills" subject of Nov. 27th talk at University of Northern Iowa. John Zmoek will talk about career opportunities for non-teaching foreign language majors.
2 Advisory council to University of Northern Iowa accounting department helps keep it among most respected in the nation. The twenty six external members of the advisory council are a vital component of the Accounting Department's visible success. Their assistance to the University comes in two main forms- money and advice.
3 Coastal shrimp farms- UNI professor helps develop Baja California. Residents of a Mexican coastal area could see their income rise from $500 to $16,000 if a project developed by Allen Jedlicka proves successful. Jedlicka is working in communities in Baja, Califorinia to build one acre shrimp ponds.
4 Cookin' the bird¿ let's talk turkey. Phillis Conklin says while there are many ways to cook the traditional Thanksgiving food, there are also a lot of ways to buy the bird¿frozen, fresh, prebasted, or selected parts.
5 Home energy conservation- new technology can save a lot of watts. Jere Wheatly says major strides have been made in energy effieient appliances and windows, and says one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to make a difference in your energy bill is to insulate and weather strip your home.
6 Physical education programs in Iowa schools should train kids for lifetime fitness. Larry Hensley says, "Kids also need to learn fundamental movement skills and lifetime activities." Particularly disturbing to Hensley is the increased risk of coronary heart disease associated with low fitness levels and obesity.
7 Price Lab science instructor helping Harvard University spread information about astronomy education throughout the U.S. Louis Finsand is the only Iowa member of the Center's Project SPICA. The program is designed to help science teachers in elementary and secondary schools across the country with instructional techniques and curriculum materials in astronomy.
8 Speaking of food, it's national eating disorders week. Joan Thompson is the advisor for a support group of anorexic and bulimic students. While more people understand the disease, it is a problem many people deal with their entire lives.
9 Three University of Northern Iowa phys ed professors honored by state association. Forrest Dolgener, Elton Green, and Larry Hensley recently received top awards from the Iowa Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
10 Tradition exposed- pilgrims weren't always a part of the holiday. Geogre Washington started Thanksgiving two hundred years ago to give thanks for the new Constitution. Abraham Lincoln officially recognized the holiday in 1863 to give thanks to God.
11 Turkey talk- what kind to buy, how to prepare it, what to do with the leftovers. A Northern Iowa home economics professors has advice. Phillis Conklin discusses the variety of forms turkey comes in this holiday season and how it can be prepared.
12 UNI accounting department advisory council serves students, faculty. Michael McBride, a 1962 graduate of the accounting program, serves now as president of the Accounting Department's Advisory Council.
