1 Can the foods we eat prevent is from getting cancer? Experts say yes. Nancy McGraw says by making some minor diet changes, we may be able to decrease the chance of certain cancers occurring. Added benefits also include reduced cholesterol levels, and general overall improved health.
2 Golden valley native combines visual and musical art interests at University of Northern Iowa. Camille Sime came to UNI on a partial music scholarship to study harp. After exploring her choices, she changed her major to art. Camille views college as a learning experience and an opportunity to learn something new.
3 Helping children identify their personal values is crucial element of education. Teachers should help their students identify and clarify their own value systems so that they can make responsible choices in life. Teacher should not push their own value system onto their students.
4 Increasing the number of minority students on campus. One expert who works with colleges to improve the atmosphere for minority students recently spoke on campus, says educators and students, as well as entire communities, need to become actively involved in making minority students feel at home on campus.
5 New program helps get children interested in math and science early. Barbara Saigo, says the goal of the program is to stimulate children's interest, as well as educate parents about the importance of science and math education.
6 Northern Iowa receives federal grant to sponsor science and math program for 'at risk' students. Aimed at students will the potential of failing in school the institute will emphasize hands-on science and mathematics activities during a three week summer program.
7 Now appearing at a school lunch near you- pizza hut pizza. Hattie Middleton, says pizza is a nutritionally based food, but says she is concerned that it may not be the best choice for some people. She says it is often high in fat, salt, and calories.
8 School guidance counselors- helping students through the good and bad. Counselors are now responsible for helping students cope with major problems such as drugs and alcohol, family problems, or academic difficulties.
