1 Delta chi fraternity of University of Northern Iowa to "teeter totter for make-a-wish foundation" Friday and Saturday (April 27, 28) The Northeast Iowa Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation is currently raising funds to grant wishes for four area children. Other fundraising activities include raffling a team autographed UNI Panther basketball, and Make-A-Wish T-Shirts.
2 How many scientists does it take to screw in a 60 watt light bulb? Researchers recently estimated that if we switched from the standard incandescent light bulbs to florescent lighting, the amount of energy produced by one nuclear reactor could be saved.
3 How safe are our playgrounds? One UNI researcher exposes hazards. Donna Thompson has conducted research on playground accidents, and where accidents are prone to take place. A past study showed that the equipment children are playing on in many playgrounds is not regularly maintained or checked for possible lawsuits.
4 Northern Iowa basketball players available to sign commemorative publication. The Office of Public Relations, published the 32 page multi-color tabloid that chronicles the team's accomplishments during the AMCU and NCAA tournaments.
5 Northern Iowa faculty members contribute to "encyclopedia of southern culture." John Johnson and two other UNI faculty members were among the 800 expert contributors who wrote pieces for the book, which covers everything from architecture, black life and agriculture, to recreation, religion and violence.
6 Report card traumas- advice for parents. Ann Vernon says parent shouldn't overrate the importance of grades. She says some studies have shown that child abuse rises noticeably in the days after report cards go home, and that's alarming.
7 Step up to the latest workout craze-step training. Jeanette Marsh owns and uses a step trainer, and says stepping provides a good aerobic workout. She says the devices are better than climbing stairs because the machines can be adjusted to safe stepping distances.
8 Students learn history, social studies through interactive computer programs Students of Price Lab School participate in a program that puts them into the shoes of the townsfolk and city council debating the pros and cons of the construction of a chemical plant in their fictional town. The program was developed by Phillip Nelson.
9 They come from space to be grown on earth- space tomatoes. Virginia Berg is growing space tomatoes. Berg is using seeds recovered from the 11-ton Long Duration Exposure Facility satellite. The seed spent nearly six years in space and some interesting mutations may develop because of the exposure to radiation.
10 University of Northern Iowa students seek support for injured classmate. Lance Kohnke was paralyzed from the waist down after diving into shallow water at a Dike roadside park during an informal party with friends. His friends Mike Dawson and Mark Elliott are seeking contributions for Lance's care.
