1 'El Rasto' to conclude elementary foreign language week at Price Laboratory school Friday (May 11). A giant flea market and carnival will take place on the front lawn of Price Laboratory School. Students earn "counterfeit" currency from Spanish speaking countries throughout the school year and "spend" their pesos at the flea market.
2 "Career beginnings" students from Des Moines visit University of Northern Iowa. "Career Beginnings" is a program for minority students, funded by Brandeis University with only 18 sites nationwide. It is designed to provide average high school juniors and seniors with career and higher education experiences.

5 Food ads targeting women are more likely to mention diet and health claims than price or quality, according to University of Northern Iowa marketing A study conducted found that in the 1960s and 1970s, price, quality, taste and consumer satisfaction claims far outnumbered diet and health claims. It changed later in the 1970s, partly due to the negative publicity surrounding cyclamate.
6 Honorary degree to be presented to Ralph Gordon Hoxie at University of Northern Iowa. Hoxie a member of the then Iowa State Teacher's College Class of 1940, will be awarded a Doctor of Human Letters degree. He is the founder of C.W. Post College in Greenvale, N.Y.
7 Northern Iowa to graduate more than 1,200 Saturday in UNI-Dome. The student address will be delivered by Annette Klein Zuck, who will receive a bachelor's degree with high honors, with a major in elementary education. Some 1,100 graduating students have indicated they will attend the ceremonies Saturday.
8 Parents should keep report cards in perspective. According to Ann Vernon the more pressure and stress we put on kids to improve their grades, the more likely they are to do even more poorly, because anxiety will get in the way of their performance.
9 Summer fun and skill development through summer camps. Ann Vernon says camps provide important skill development and the opportunity to interact with children who share similar interests. Vernon encourages parents to look at camps as activities that can help their children polish athletic or academic skills.
10 Transcendental meditation, chanting and mind control- are they related? James Robinson says while chanting is a major part of the transcendental meditation movement, doubts the seriousness of mind control claims. Transcendental is a branch of Hinduism.
11 UNI Marketing students, professor, survey food ads in women's magazines. Food advertisements targeting women increasingly use diet and nutrition claims to get their attention, according to a recent study completed by assistant professor of marketing Michael Klassen and two senior students, Suzanne Wauer and Sheila Cassel.
12 Walk your way to health- fitness trend strolls right along. Kathy Gulick says more people are putting on their walking shoes and are taking to the sidewalks, malls, and parks to get in shape by walking. She says many experts agree that a couple of miles a day can cut heart risks.
13 Want to save some $$$- try coupon clippings. Karen Glynn says surveys show that the value of cents off coupons is increasing, but redemption is decreasing. She says that may be due to the fact that couponing can be a time consuming way to save money.
