1	Progressive Picnic connects students to communities	Northern Iowa Democrats, Freethinkers and Inquirers, Philosophy Club, UNI Proud, and One Iowa joined in the recruitment event, the first of its kind in recent memory. Food, drinks, lawn games, and live music highlighted the event; photo.
1	Students and staff adjust to eLearning changes	WebCT has been purchased by Blackboard Learn 9. The changeover has not been simple. This is the first semester after the change. Growing pains will be evident to many.
1	GBPAC stage set for 2011-12 season	The stage in the Performing Arts Center has been replaced following the breaking of a sprinkler head prior to the Blue Man Group last year. $150,000 was spent on the new floor.
2	Lunch held for transfer students	Free pizza, cookies, and drinks will be available at the Transfer Student Welcome Lunch on August 31 in ballroom C of the Maucker Union.
2	UNI Museums holds annual photography contest	The theme for the contest is "Iowa's Cultural Heritage". Entry requirements are provided. The photographs will be on display from December 19 thru January 21, 2012.
2	UNI alumna holding art lecture	Lois E. Iseminger will speak on the topic," UNI Accounting Blends with Art", in the Kamerick Art Building on August 31, 2011. Ms. Iseminger graduated in 1971 with a degrees in marketing and accounting. She is a collector of fine art.
2	Multicultural student reception kicks off new retention initiative	Everyone is welcome to monthly forums aimed at aiding in the retention of students. The forums will address student concerns.
4	College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Spring 2011 Dean's List	Students named to the Dean's List earned a 3.5 grade point average while completing a minimum of twelve credit hours. Congratulations to students named to the list. Students listed.
5	A pebble for the political pond	The Republican straw poll held in Ames is taken to task. Writer prefers candidates who earn his vote, not buy it.
5	Freshmen should utilize springboard housing	Writer recalls living in springboard housing. This type is available in Bender, Campbell, Dancer, Hagemann, and Noehren Halls. Students are housed with students similar in age and also new to campus. Upperclassmen do not stay in their rooms very much.
9	Get the best bang for your BOOK	Textbooks are expensive. There are online alternatives to University Book and Supply. Comparisons made and prices explained. Students need to be aware of purchasing the correct editions; photo.
10	Final Thursday reading series kicks off	The Hearst Center for the Arts had a near capacity crowd for the first session of the Thursday reading series. The open microphone session was full before the night began. The sessions are held the last Thursday of each month; photo.
10	From email to Gmail: UNI moves to Google Apps	"Google Apps for Education" provides recent technology for schools without the high cost. Google Apps has a reputation for high quality service.
10	Social media	Twitter accounts provide a quick dose of celebrity gossip or news and some comic relief.
11	UNI I am Experiencing the UNIverse	Siobahn Morgan shares the universe with students; taking them to the observatory on the roof of McCollum Science Hall on Thursday evenings. In the winter they meet in the planetarium in Latham Hall; photo.
13	UNI soccer wraps up NAU tournament with overtime win	Soccer team now stands 2-2-0 following a win over Northern Arizona.
13	UNI volleyball starts 3-0, sweeps NIU Invitational	Volleyball team defeats Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, the University of Cincinnati, and Northern Illinois University during the opening weekend of play in DeKalb, Illinois; photo.
