3/12/2020 The Center for Multicultural Education (CME) honored the 50th anniversary of the UNI Seven on March 9 in the Maucker Union Ballrooms. The article discusses the 1970 peaceful protests that led to the suspension of seven students - "The UNI 7" - and subsequent protest where almost 30 students were arrested. One of the protest demands was a learning space for people of color - two years later, the vice president's house became the Ethnic Minority Cultural and Educational Center, which evolved into today's CME. Ten activists involved in the protests were present at the event: Ann Burke, Palmer Byrd, Christopher Dalton, James Johnson, Glen Moore, Terry Sallis, Terry Stevens, Tony Stevens, Joseph Sailor, and Byron Washington; photo.

2/20/2020 The Black Student Union (BSU) hosted the panel "Black and Educated" in the Maucker Union Ballroom on February 18. Panelists, all UNI employees, included Ieshia Brown, academic advisor for Student Support Services; Dr. Mickye Johnson, director of the Upward Bound program; Dr. Irenea Walker, assistant professor of elementary education; Dr. Shuaib Meacham, associate professor of literacy, and Dr. Robert Welch, director of academic advising in the College of Education. Panelists shared their experiences and challenges as Black educators, described UNI's environment for people of color, and discussed ways that UNI students, especially white students, can contribute to a positive shift on campus; photo.

Sarah Rassing, a graduate student and NISG Director of Mental Health helped coordinate the events to hopefully make this annual. 11/14/2019 More than 200 students, faculty, and community members attended a town hall hosted by the UNI Racial and Ethnic Coalition (REC) at Maucker Union on November 11. REC summarized their formation and launch of the #UNIisnotanAlly campaign, directed at what they viewed as a failure of UNI's administration to act on goals to combat racism. REC took questions and invited students of color to share their experiences.
