In the author's opinion, Rosemary Kennedy's story exemplifies a reminder of fatal flaws in society in regards to the treatment of people with intellectual disabilities. Slomka discusses how Rosemary (daughter of Joseph and Rose Kennedy) was shunned by her famous family, underwent a failed experimental lobotomy at 23, and was institutionalized until she died of natural causes at the age of 86 in 2005. Her sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver created the Special Olympics in her memory. Slomka advocates for confronting atrocities, more awareness, and better treatment.
12 Wells' passion to mentor underprivileged youth

Brawntae Wells, a junior defensive lineman on the football team, was recognized as the October Playmaker of the Month. He received this award due to his off-the-field passion to mentor and inspire underprivileged youth. This recognition was given out by the Institute for Sport and Social Justice. Wells works as a volunteer youth mentor with the Juvenile Court Services in Waterloo and at the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center. He is currently on pace to graduate with a degree in Family Services and a minor in Criminology; photo.
