1 Fashion flash: senior citizens are tired of polyester! University of Northern Iowa professor explores lifestyles and clothing preferences of older Ame Carolyn Thomas completed her doctoral work studying the clothing needs of older women. She found that today's senior citizens travel, dance, swim and date. They need comfortable, classy leisure wear, few clothing manufacturers, have figured that out.
2 Harnessing wind energy -- viable alternative for Iowa? University of Northern Iowa research project explores electricity-producing wind turbines. The UNI industrial technology departments will work with two wind turbines this year to gather data about wind patterns and energy output using a computer program. Both turbines were donated to the University.
3 Northern Iowa college debate tournament draws record numbers from across nation. The University of Kentucky took first place in the senior division, where a record 58 teams were entered, including seven of the nine teams invited to compete in the "Kentucky Thoroughbred Round Robin." Northern Iowa, as host, was unable to compete.
4 Ten of eleven national accountancy award winners in state of Iowa are graduates of University of Northern Iowa; UNI top in nation in 1988 in exam.
