1 Des Moines presidential scholar at University of Northern Iowa will pursue law. Joan Larsen is a member of the first class of Presidential Scholars at Northern Iowa. In addition to peer counseling, Larsen is president of Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish honorary. She is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa.
2 First place in Iowa intercollegiate forensic competition to University of Northern Iowa individual events team. Ten member of the University of Northern Iowa's individual events speech team captured the first place sweepstakes. UNI place in events such as; triathlon, persuasive speaking, program of oral interpretation and after dinner speaking.
3 International dance workshop featuring Balkan music and dance to be held at University of Northern Iowa. A well-known authority on music and dance of the Balkan lands, Dick Crum, will be leading the lecture demonstration as well as the dancing workshops.
4 Research center for study of adolescent problems to be created at University of Northern Iowa. Board of Regents accepted a report announcing the creation of a Center for the Study of Adolescence, designed to coordinate interdisciplinary research into problems such as gang violence, poor academic performance, and sexual and physical abuse.
5 Third year in a row- University of Northern Iowa's top ranked debate duo receives pre-district national debate tournament bid. Aaron Hawbaker and Ken Schuler have an 86 percent preliminary won record and a season total in eight tournaments of 73 wins and 17 losses. Their overall win percentage is 81 percent.
6 University of Northern Iowa admissions office hard at work on regents program. The College Bound program has been established to provide Iowa minority students with information and experiences relating to opportunities in higher education.
7 University of Northern Iowa admissions office hard at work on regents program. Students in the "New Horizons" program at the Boys/Girls Club in Waterloo are among the state's first participants in the College Bound Program. As part of the program, they recently attended an enrichment session at the UNI Museum.
8 Urbandale Presidential Scholar at University of Northern Iowa will pursue law. Joan Larsen says her college career has been much more valuable because of the wide variety of non-academic activities she participates in, and urges other students to take advantage of extracurricular opportunities as well.
