1 Exercise for preschool kids- professor devises kindergym. Rip Marston has developed a program to help get kids in shape from an early age. He says it's important to start children in activities that will help them stay in shape early.
2 Five students awarded $500 Mabel Wright scholarships at University of Northern Iowa. The scholarships are memorials to Mabel McNally Wright, director of physical training at UNI from 1907-1910. They are designed for women of promising ability who need financial assistance to prepare themselves to teach physical education.
3 Look deeply into the ad and buy-buy-buy, subliminal advertising. Dennis Clayson says he isn't surprised by the new findings, since subliminal messages haven't been proven to be that effective. Advertisers claim they aren't being used, many examples can be found.
4 Lyme disease threats- is it keeping people indoors? James Reidy was concerned that people may have been limiting their outdoor activities because of tick and Lyme hysteria. A recent survey competed by Reidy shows that not to be the case.
5 Ten University of Northern Iowa students awarded Joseph S. Wright scholarships. List of students who were awarded. The scholarships are memorials to Joseph S. Wright, a 1909 graduate of UNI and long time director of physical education at Francis Parker School in Chicago.
6 The dangers of heat stress- it's that time of year. Barbara Krieg says heat exhaustion can bring on flu like symptoms that last for 2-3 days. However, heat stroke is an extremely dangerous condition, that can lead to brain damage and death.
7 The whir of the Wurlitzer- a serious concern among church organists. Churches across the country are being faced with an unusual problem the supply of church organists is drying up. Marilou Kratzenstein is organizing the first ever conference, and says the organ is a complex instrument, of which no two sound exactly alike.
8 University of Northern Iowa student receives three physical education scholarships. Christian P. DuPont is the 1990-1991 recipient of three scholarships from the UNI School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services. They are a $500 Joseph Wright Scholarship, a $25 Virginia Ramsey Scholarship and a $150 Wild and White Award.
9 University of Northern Iowa students awarded $500 Shirley Winsberg scholarship. Mary Shoup is the recipient. Shoup is an assistant softball coach at East High School, assistant girls' 7th grade basketball coach at Logan Intermediate School, and head volleyball coach for 7th grade.
10 University of Northern Iowa students receive James Clark memorial scholarships. Troy Becker is a graduate of UNI with and undergraduate degree in industrial arts and physical education. Julie Kemp is a 1988 graduate of Cornell College, with an undergraduate degree in health and physical education.
