1 Sen. Hatch starts new campaign As re-election season comes closer, Senator Jack Hatch has joined the race for governor. He believes that there needs to be more focus on funding for higher education. He supports Branstad's initiatives to help veterans, and wants to expand them.
1 Revised student assessment instrument will come in spring A committee has been formed to revise the assessment form that allows students to evaluate their professors each semester. The pilot of the new assessment will be tested this semester. It is important for professors to receive student feedback.
3 All-staff opinion column: What is a critical issue that needs to be addressed at UNI and why? Members of the editorial staff answered the question: class scheduling, meal options, enrollment, diversity, and technology were some of the topics discussed.
4 'Before Summer' illustrates growing up gay in Iowa Review of the book "Before Summer" written by Harry Arlo Nimmo, a UNI alumnus; reflects on his experience at UNI as both enjoyable and educational. The book deals with the pressure and fears of being homosexual in the 1950's.

6 Panthers lose on late 3 to Drake UNI women's basketball lost to Drake University, 66-64. Drake scored in the last seconds of the game with a 3-pointer. The Panthers failed to get the defensive rebound resulting in the Bulldog win. UNI takes on Southern Illinois University next; photo.
6 Politics put a black eye on Olympics This year's Winter Olympics features a lot of controversy over Russian laws on homosexual rights. Safety is a top concern for athletes. Participants are cautioned about wearing team colors outside of events due to potential terrorist attacks.
